Engelstad and Gerrard's edited collection, Challenging Situatedness, challenges Donna Haraway's concept of situated knowledge primarily by expanding and extending it rather than critiquing it. Karin Widerberg, in her essay that concludes the volume, "Situated Knowledge--Liberating or Oppressive," does suggest that situating knowledge can be both liberating and oppressive (267). A major theme of the book, however, is that Haraway's concept, which was originally meant to be applied to scientific research, can be recontextualized in very productive and provocative ways. Essays in the collection demonstrate quite convincingly that the concept is useful in examining a variety of cultural texts and contexts such as postcolonial development, ethnographic film, audiences and readers, museums, handicrafts, the history of early-modern Norway, the...
