Herbert S. Church Jr.' s rise within Turner Construction Company was nearly as dramatic as some of the skyscrapers he oversaw construction of.

From his first job as a timekeeper on projects, Mr. Church rose through the ranks to become vice president in charge of the company's central region, which took in offices in Chicago, Detroit, Cleveland, Columbus, Cincinnati, Houston and Atlanta.
