Kevin Taylor is not a market researcher.

Yes, he's standing in front of a group of people discussing which laundry detergent best removed a grape juice stain from a T- shirt.

He has photos, comparisons and samples of the actual shirts in question.

But the eighth-grader is actually taking part in the Fremont Middle School science fair, in only the second year it has been held.

Kevin's teacher, Tim Fennell, watches as the student talks about his project with the class during a weeklong presentation in the school.

Students in grades six through eight took part in the science fair at the Mundelein school Friday. It was engineered to help students learn different aspects of the scientific process.

Fennell said students had been participating in the Science Olympiad, but the fair was a new addition.

"The science fair hits on different standards," Fennell said, noting that the quality of eighth-grade projects has already improved...
