If you give a couple of guys professional cooking classes, will they ever again be satisfied with frozen pizza?

It doesn't seem likely with Jeff McDonald and Steve Colella, buddies for the past decade who most recently have been bonding over really sharp knives and insanely complex recipes.

"I can't just boil carrots anymore," says Jeff. "They have to be blanched, then shocked, sauteed and flamed in brandy."

Is that a burden or a pleasure? "I think it's a good thing," he says.

Jeff, an attorney, and Steve, who works in the direct mail industry, live just down the road from each other in Arlington Heights. They met when their children joined Indian Guides 10 years ago, and that's when they first tested their culinary chops.

Each night after the boys went to sleep the dads would stage a cookout. Initially the guys prepared brats with roasted onions and peppers, but they advanced to deep-fried turkey and, ultimately, steaks and live lobsters.

A couple of years ago, Jeff convinced Steve to sign up for a cooking class at Harper College in Palatine, and they were off.
