As I began a speech at the Cottage Grove Chamber of Commerce's annual dinner Saturday night at the Downtown Athletic Club, I told people I'd imagined how the talk might go.

I'd say something and the audience would burst into wild applause. I'd say something else and the audience would burst into more wild applause, I mean fist-pumping, go-Ducks sort of applause.

I'd say something else ... Then I'd realize people had earphones in their ears and, uh-oh, were reacting not to my speech - they weren't listening to a word I was saying - but to the radio broadcast of the Oregon/Washington State...
