The question now is, Stanford: contender for Pac-10 title, or pretender for NCAA Tournament berth?

The upside is that the Cardinal, after their comeback win over UCLA, are only a game out of first place in the Pac-10. The other view is that the 10 games remaining in the regular season offer some definite challenges for Stanford, beginning with Gonzaga on Wednesday night.

Then there's a game at California, with the Cardinal still having the two most difficult trips in the league left, to Los Angeles and the state of Washington. Two of the remaining league games at home are against teams that beat Stanford in the first half of the season, Arizona and Oregon.

Maybe all that is why even the Stanford players were tempering their excitement about defeating the Bruins on Sunday.

`You guys might glorify it,' Stanford's Fred Washington said. `But the Pac-10 is tough this year. We can't look at this game and be like this is what we want to accomplish this year. This year is far from over.'

So it is, but consider that Stanford has won six of its past seven games, with the only loss in that span at McArthur Court. The Cardinal is 6-0 in games in which both of the Lopez twins started; Brook didn't open against Oregon because he'd been 20 minutes...
