February training set for whale watch volunteers

Volunteer training for the spring "Whale Watching Spoken Here" program on the Oregon Coast will be offered Feb. 10-11 at the Oregon Institute of Marine Biology in Charleston. The training will prepare volunteers for the March 24-March 31 whale watch week, when 28 "Whale Watching Spoken Here" sites are staffed to help visitors spot Gray whales and to provide information about the whales and their migration. Details and application forms are available from the Oregon Parks and Recreation Department's Whale Watching Interpretive Center in Depot Bay; e-mail: morris.grover@state.or.us or telephone (541) 765-3304. The forms also can be printed from the Internet at www.whalespoken.org.

Arboretum events focus on plants, lichens, herbal oils

Mount Pisgah Arboretum will offer a trio of plant-related educational activities this weekend. "Licorice Ferns and Other Delicious Plants" will be the focus of a guided nature walk for kids at 1 p.m. Saturday. On Sunday, Daphne Stone will lead a "Lichen Walk" that explores the symbiotic relationships between algae and fungi that create the many species of lichens.
