The daily war on our roads now has one more active battle-front: guerilla combat between motorists and cyclists. Like it or not, talkback radio is the most accessible medium for expressing emotion on any subject, and the level of ire directed by drivers towards bike riders on talkback programs is now remarkably intense. Tension has been simmering for years, and the single instance of a pedestrian death in Victoria caused by a cyclist has seen such low-level indignation rise to a crescendo of livid rage (by comparison, in the last five years 318 pedestrians have been killed by cars).

So why do car drivers regard cyclists with such visceral loathing in the first place? To seek answers we need only put ourselves in the shoes (or, rather, the seats) of the respective travelers.
