Eugene has earned its slogan

Did one of the editors have a bad holiday? Coal in the stocking, perhaps? I'm referring to the Dec. 26 editorial, ``A slogan with swagger.'' I'll grant that, as slogans go, it is awkward, but to call it grandiose and manifestly untrue seems unfair.

Perhaps said editor would like to provide us with a list of places better suited to the "World's Greatest City of the Arts and Outdoors" title. Does even one come to mind? We have so many entertainment venues that, like potters at Saturday Market, they are forced to compete for our dollars, helping to give us more bang for the buck. As for the outdoors, how many cities can offer rock climbing just blocks from City Hall?

As local luminary Don Kahle recently observed, "Other towns have better access to the outdoors and many cities host more and better choices for the arts, but few or none have combined them so well."

Being content to call us "Track City, U.S.A." is limiting and offers nothing of interest to the non-track fan. How is that better? Consider Oregon's old and renewed motto, "She Flies With Her Own Wings." Once, it was a political statement of some moment. Now it languishes, with "The Union" still replacing it on our flag and state seal.

Perhaps you'd prefer the statement made on a Saturday Market vendor's T-shirts, "Eugene: We're Here Because We're Not All There." At least it beats, "Eugene: No Slogan We...
