Maybe more than usual, Oregon coach Bev Smith went into Saturday's game against Brigham Young wondering where the difference was going to come from.

The Ducks and Cougars averaged the same number of points (63), while Oregon was surrendering just one point more on defense (56-55).

"Rebounds, turnovers and free throws," Smith determined. "We really felt our quickness could work in our favor and that our perimeter players could get to the free-throw line."

They did, and then they scored once they got there.

In a rare nonleague game played after the start of the Pac-10 season, the Ducks defeated BYU 70-61 in front of a season-high 3,100 at McArthur Court to improve to 9-3 overall.

Both teams shot 41.7 percent from the field and Oregon was outrebounded 37-29.

But the Ducks converted 26 of their 31 free-throw attempts - their most points from the foul line in two seasons - while the Cougars (9-4) were only 9-for-15.
