Many Eugene-Springfield residents on Saturday eased into the New Year's weekend, but not Nathan Oeming and the Eugene Active 20/30 Club.

Oeming commanded a squad of Active 20/30 Club members who fanned out across the metro area, tossing discarded Christmas trees in the backs of trucks for a donation. They'll do the same today and next weekend.

A 26-year-old financial adviser, Oeming coordinated the club's efforts and, at one point, accompanied club member Ted Utley, who drove up and down Eugene's south hills collecting trees from curbs.

While Oeming and Utley were at work in one neighborhood, two residents who hadn't arranged for a collection hailed the men and handed over their trees, with $10 and $8 donations, respectively.
