Assigning value to 250,000 pieces of property is bound to create some differences of opinion, but Lake County owners apparently feel more satisfied this year with the process.
With two of the county's 18 townships still to report, the number of appeals is down considerably. Assessments, used to calculate property tax rates, theoretically represent one third of a property's market value.
In 2005, property owners filed 4,783 appeals, said Martin Paulson, Lake County's chief assessment officer. That is expected to drop about 25 percent, to about 3,600, for 2006. About 40 percent of appeals are successful, he added.
