This is a story about Meghan Ryan, who has acute myeloid leukemia. But Ryan says this story is about seventh-grade students at Wredling Middle School, who pooled their efforts for a Make a Difference Day project this past October to benefit Ryan. And it's a story about the book, "Sadako and the Thousand Paper Cranes," by Eleanor Coerr, which inspired the students' project.
"We had been looking for a Make a Difference Day project," said student Morgan Corbett. "Me and a boy in the class (Zach Hill) had read the story of Sadako, and we said we could make paper cranes, because (they are supposed to make) a single wish come true. We thought it would make Mrs. Ryan feel better."
Classmate Ellen Jacobs brought the book to school, "so we would all know the story," she said.
"Everybody agreed to make paper cranes," said language arts teacher Kathleen Rentas. "Those who knew how to make origami taught those who didn't....
