As a young girl growing up in Nigeria, Uche Onwuta would accompany her mother to rural villages where they would dispense prenatal vitamins to woman who otherwise would receive no health care during their pregnancies.

Onwuta became interested in medicine at a young age. But it took spending 11 years in medical research in Africa and the United States before she decided to follow in the footsteps of her mother, a nurse, by entering the field of public health.

"I really needed the community touch," said Onwuta, who now lives in St. Charles and is one of Kane County's top public health officials. "I wanted to see the effect (of my work) on the community."
