The new year in Elgin a century ago kicked off with open houses at many of the city's churches, clubs and lodges.

Sports enthusiasts enjoyed a gun shoot on the shoe factory grounds north of the city, while basketball fans witnessed a game between two Chicago teams at a downtown gym.

Those who wanted a bit of exercise found the YMCA gymnasium and bowling alleys open for their use.

But January 1907 was filled with less than pleasant happenings, too.

The month saw the return of a much dreaded disease, a focus on deplorable conditions at the city jail and a case of child abandonment that we do not usually associate with the good old days.
