NUEVA YORK, Jan. 2, 2007 (IPS) - Al completar sus 10 años como secretario general de la ONU, Kofi Annan dejó atrás sus reconocidos éxitos en la promoción de la paz, el desarrollo, el empoderamiento femenino y los derechos humanos, pero también fracasos administrativos admitidos por él mismo.

En su conferencia de prensa previa a la despedida, Annan ya había apuntado directamente al multimillonario y muy cuestionado programa Petróleo Por Alimentos en Iraq que, dijo, fue "explotado para debilitar a la organización".

"Pero pienso que cuando los historiadores miren los registros llegarán a la conclusión de que sí, hubo mala administración; y puede haber varios miembros del personal de la ONU (Organización de las Naciones Unidas) que hayan estado comprometidos" en conductas poco éticas, admitió.

Señaló que el escándalo, "si es que lo hubo", tuvo que ver con "las 2.200 compañías que hicieron acuerdos con (el ex presidente iraquí) Saddam (Hussein) a nuestras espaldas".
