Counting birds is not your fair-weather outdoor activity. The annual, informal national census known as the Christmas Bird Count happens each year between Dec. 14 and Jan. 5, not when Mother Nature is inclined to be benign.

But that won't stop the 50,000 enthusiasts nationwide who will spend a day from dawn to dusk keeping a tally of the birds they see in their area.

In Eugene, last year's bird count began on a dark, stormy morning with gusting wind and rain, said Dick Lamster, who organizes the event for the Lane County Audubon Society.

But by afternoon, the clouds relented, the sun came out and birders got an eyeful. The 117 volunteers on 27 teams saw...
