Article Excerpt Earlier this year, the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment reported that 60 per cent of 'ecosystem services' are being degraded or used unsustainably. This means that many natural resources, such as fresh water, fisheries or soil, are being used in such a way as to threaten collapse. Data from the 1360 specialist contributors to the report are organised around assessments of human interaction with twenty-four 'services provided by nature', which include water purification, fibre and food production and genetic resources. Of these primary categories of sustenance, fifteen were considered to be in decline--or in the language of the report, in 'deficit'.
Climate change is the most subtle of the forces of environmental transformation. Unlike deforestation, pollution or overpopulation, which present themselves palpably, changes in patterns of temperature or rainfall are not immediately apparent.
