Less than two months ago I received a forwarded email from my cousin circulating a petition 'against the planned banning of the Chinese traditional (or longer) form written characters'. With my usual propensity for cynicism, I regarded it as curious.

The Chinese language has, for want of a better term, a 'dual system' of written characters. For matters of convenience they're called the 'traditional (longer) form' and the 'simplified form'. Although it's difficult to generalise, much of mainland China has largely normalised the simplified form, whereas the traditional form is still largely read/written in several places, including Hong Kong and Taiwan....
