Education Minister Julie Bishop's Australian History Summit in August, with its 94-page transcript on the Minister's website, and its dozen recommendations about what ought to be done, are already well chewed. The tricky bit is 'how'.

The Summit focused on secondary school Australian history with some kindly glances at primary. But the foundation in primary school needs to be different from the superstructure, and given separate consideration.

Primary school is a time for children to develop mental schemas about the world and how to live in it--structures that can assimilate future learning, and that change to accommodate new learning.
