To perform or not to perform?

There's a fundamental difference in the philosophies of many of the U.S.'s summer intensive programs. Some teachers believe that focusing on technique and omitting an end-of-the-session performance is to the student's advantage. They want to bring dancers to the highest level of technical skill in the studio. Others incorporate fully-staged productions into the sessions, arguing that learning about performance is an integral part of creating the complete dancing artist. To omit that would be to leave out a large part of a dancer's training.

Then there are the programs that fall in the middle--usually intensives with a more modern focus. They have developed programs that focus on learning choreography in a variety of different styles. An informal showing is usually sufficient to help focus the dancers.
