It's no surprise that former state-run monopoly KT (NYSE:KTC) has emerged as South Korea's #1 phone company. Formerly Korea Telecom, it is that nation's dominating provider of fixed-line (21 million lines in service), business, data communication services, and broadband Internet access (Megapass, which boasts more than 6 million subscribers). KT's mobile telecommunication service (45%-owned KT Freetel (KTF), with more than 10 million subscribers) ranks a strong second to SK Telecom. At home, KT is focusing on its broadband, wireless Internet, and satellite technologies for growth, while winning contracts in China and Vietnam. The national government sold its remaining 28% stake in the formerly state-owned company in 2002.

Shares were down 3% as minor telecom companies will not receive preferential treatment.
