In a paneled studio with a drop ceiling, fluorescent lights, and a shelf lined with gleaming trophies, Denise Wall strides among her jazz students as they cross the floor in a pirouette combination. Some surprise themselves, turning three or four times. Some struggle--"Fight for it!" she exhorts. They sweat and turn again and again. "Ms. Denise! Look how square I am!" says one student, preparing to pirouette. "Just stay there, then. Enjoy it!" responds Wall.

Denise Wall's Dance Energy, in Virginia Beach, Virginia, does not boast large studios or vast numbers of students.
