Commerce Township's 21/2-year push to turn two golf courses into a $650 million-$775 million civic, residential and retail project could face its final hurdle by early next year: approval to build a north-south road that extends the route of M-5 and eases congestion without defying federal restrictions.

Wynn Berry, the township's Downtown Development Authority executive director, said the DDA is awaiting approval from the Michigan Department of Transportation to begin seeking public input on $12 million to $15 million in road work that would, in part, extend Martin Road to end in a roundabout, or traffic circle, at M-5 and Pontiac Trail in the southwest Oakland County community.
