Article Excerpt John Stow (1525-1605) and the Making of the English Past Edited by Ian Gadd and Alexandra Gillespie London: The British Library, 2004
John Stow, antiquary, chronicler, topographer, editor, collector of manuscripts, and merchant tailor, was an elder contemporary of Shakespeare whose work impinged most directly on Shakespeare's through Stow s contributions to Holinshed's Chronicles and possibly through Stew's updated (and unsuccessful) rival to Holinshed, the Annals of 1592. Renewed attention to the history and literature of sixteenth-century London has resulted in much new work on Stow, including B. L. Beer's Tudor London Observed: The World of John Stow (1998) and the collection Imagining Early Modern London: Perceptions and Portayals of the City from Stow to Strype, 1598-1720, a volume based on a 1998 conference commemorating the four hundredth anniversary of the first edition of Stow's monumental Survey of London (1598). The present volume, deriving from an Oxford conference on "John Stow (1525-1605): Author, Editor, and Reader" (2001) and dominated by the current "history of the book" approach, rounds out our picture of Stow by showing how his many dimensions converge around the Elizabethan traffic in books and manuscripts....
