It's already the year of the freshmen in the Pac-10, and the calendar hasn't even turned to December yet.

Five teams have freshmen as their leading scorer at this early juncture, and seven teams have three or more freshmen in their regular rotation.

It's not surprising that in the rebuilding project that is Arizona State there are three freshmen starters, but even at the top of the league, freshmen are taking over their teams.

Arizona's best player, and that's saying something, is freshman Chase Buddinger. Another Sean Elliott, UA coach Lute Olson was heard to suggest, and that's great praise from him.

Washington has been starting two freshmen, and it soon might be three. California won the Great Alaska Shootout, with a freshman leading the way.

The league's leading scorer, at 24 points per game, is Oregon freshman Tajuan Porter, at 5-foot-6 the shortest of them all.

All that said, the youth movement is nowhere more apparent than at USC. The Trojans not only start three freshmen, but one could still be a high school senior, except he was so anxious to join the Trojans.
