Now what, Oregon?

As Bill Moos formally announced he would no longer be the man in charge of Oregon athletics at a Monday news conference, and UO president Dave Frohnmayer offered praise for his stewardship of the department these past dozen years, the primary questions centered on what the future holds for the Ducks.

The new basketball arena remains a priority, Frohnmayer said, though when remains in doubt. At least $100 million needs to be raised in private donations for the project, Frohnmayer said.

Could the actual cost be double that? `I hope not ... I don't want to speculate but it's substantial,' the president said.

There shouldn't be changes in the overall direction of the program, both Moos and the UO president agreed. Moos spoke of the Ducks becoming `a big-time program ... my wish and hope is that will continue on for decades.'

Frohnmayer said that status is `absolutely' good for the university, and he meant beyond athletics.
