For some time, feminists in the disciplines of political science, history and cultural studies have been grappling with the challenges posed by the emergence of queer theory over the previous decade. Sheila Jeffreys' latest work, Unpacking Queer Politics: A Lesbian Feminist Perspective, is aimed at, and for the most part succeeds in, challenging what the author argues is the dominance of queer theory in sexual politics today. For Jeffreys, formerly trained as an historian, and author of a series of intrepid critiques of contemporary constructions of sexuality, her fifth book is an anticipated successor to her radical feminist philosophy that proposes that sexuality, as a social construct, is not liberating in its own right but a political institution that is founded on women's oppression.
