John Maynor's book is a contribution to the rapidly expanding field of Republican literature. Since the early 1990s, with the work of Quentin Skinner and especially since the publication of Philip Pettit's book Republicanism in 1997, there has been the growing contention that the liberal--communitarian debate misses the neo-roman articulation of liberty and government. The argument posed by those that seek to resurrect the neo-roman aspiration is that between the liberal conception of liberty as non-interference and the communitarian idea of liberty as self-mastery there rests the neo-roman account of liberty as non-domination.
