In his introductory chapter to 'The Progressive Manifesto', Anthony Giddens rails against critics in a spirited defence of 'Third Way' politics. Giddens defends the 'Third Way' against the frequently levelled charges of a compromising middle way, a sophisticated PR exercise of the Blair and Clinton Governments or an ill-defined and incoherent political philosophy. He reasserts the relevance of 'Third Way' politics by arguing it reinvents the role of economy and government beyond the traditional notions of right or left politics. The key principles of this reconceptualised politics are the 'ensuring state', 'civil economy' and 'embedded economy'.
