One of the important lessons one must learn when putting out a mainstream newspaper is the difference between "something for everyone" and "pleasing everyone."

The first goal is reasonable. The second is not.

That point was brought home unmistakably in two reader complaints we received via our Web site in the past week.

In one note, a reader criticized our news judgment because on the day after Thanksgiving, we placed atop the front page the story of some teenagers who remodeled their parents' Bloomingdale home while the parents were away on vacation.
