Donald Rumsfeld would have us believe that deadlines are awful, that they serve no purpose.

But doesn't he remember that the Commander-in-Chief of All the Americas told our elderly who needed some extra time to decide on Medicare Part D, that he would not cut them any slack?

"Deadlines are good," President Bush said (after granting several extensions to the Iraqi government to rewrite their constitution, get voting under way, etc.).

Please spare me the apples-and-oranges argument that we cannot reconcile the granting of a few weeks' extra time to our own country's...
