SALEM - Gov. Ted Kulongoski said Wednesday that his surprise two-day visit this week to Iraq confirmed his sense that things are getting worse there.

From his visceral experiences of being rocked by "a couple big bangs" earlier that morning to his observations as a veteran politician of signs that a democratic form of government is struggling to take hold, Kulongoski offered statehouse reporters a gloomy accounting of what he'd witnessed.

"I don't think we are getting ahead," the governor said via telephone from Kuwait City, Kuwait.

Kulongoski left Oregon Sunday for Washington, D.C., before the Pentagon flew him and three other governors to Iraq...
