Sonja Newcombe gave Oregon volleyball coach Jim Moore a taste of her leadership qualities long before she ever donned a Duck uniform, when she marched into Moore's office while on an unofficial visit as a high school junior.

Newcombe, the 2004 California state tournament MVP, and her mother had joined another recruit earlier in the day at McArthur Court to watch Oregon practice. When Newcombe asked the other girl why she signed with the Ducks, the player said it was because Oregon wasn't too serious about volleyball and neither was she, so it was a perfect fit.

"I remember my mouth just dropped and I was staring at her in disbelief," said Newcombe, who was named to the Pac-10 all-freshman team as a middle blocker and also earned honorable mention on the all-league team.
