PLEASANT HILL - Chess coach Pete Helzer saw promise in Caleb Kesey five years ago, soon after taking on the then-9-year-old as his protege.

So convinced was he of Caleb's prowess that Helzer, who is also a sculptor, fashioned a tiny knight to incorporate into his bronze statue in downtown Eugene depicting the boy's late grandfather, the celebrated author Ken Kesey, reading to his three grandchildren. Caleb sits in the middle, the knight inconspicuously affixed to the bottom of his shoe.

"It was just kind of a little comment on his chess playing," recalled Helzer, who coaches the Pleasant Hill High School chess team.
