Homegrown toy retailer Geppetto's may be, as the company's slogan goes, "a child's fantasy," but it also happens to be a dream come true for owner Brian Miller.
He has owned the 35-year-old specialty chain for the past 14 years, succeeding where most other independents have failed as capital-heavy big box retailers, such as Wal-Mart, encroach on the market.
Miller's secret: patience and a genuine fondness for child's play.
Miller, who expects sales of $5 million this year, opened his sixth location last week in the new Otay Ranch Town Center, an 86-acre, 813,000-square-foot mall in Chula Vista.
Next month, he expects to open his seventh in 4S Ranch, near Rancho Bernardo, not far from Interstate 15. He's also entering the most crucial time of the year for his type of business--the holiday shopping season.
"So much of the sales business is contingent on the fourth quarter," Miller said. "December and November are huge for us."
