Prime time can be anytime. That's the idea behind TiVo (NASDAQ:TIVO) and its digital video recorder (DVR). The DVR (similar to a VCR, but recorded onto a hard drive instead of videocassettes) allows its more than 4.4 million subscribers to digitally record up to 140 hours of TV (broadcast, cable, or satellite). In addition to buying a DVR, customers also pay for the TiVo subscription service, which are essentially high tech TV listings. TiVo uses contract manufacturers to make TiVo-branded DVRs; in addition, customers such as DIRECTV, Humax, Pioneer, Sony, and Toshiba make TiVo-enabled DVRs under their own brand names, which are then sold through retailers such as Best Buy and Circuit City.

Shares were down 9% in pre-market trading Thursday.
