Zoltek Companies (NASDAQ:ZLT) wants to lighten your load. The company makes carbon fibers that can be used in a variety of applications due to their lightweight, high-strength, conductive, and corrosion-resistant properties. Carbon fibers are most common in aircraft brakes, and Zoltek has been expanding their use by employing them in composites for sporting goods like golf clubs and tennis rackets. Zoltek has three segments: heat- and flame-resistant technical fibers (PYRON), carbon fibers (PANEX), and specialty products (acrylic fibers and industrial materials). Customers include Goodrich (for aircraft brakes, accounting for about 15%) and Leggett & Platt (flame-retardant materials). CEO Zsolt Rumy owns 31% of Zoltek.
