A subsidiary of government-owned China Telecom Group, which owns a 71% stake, this China Telecom is one fortunate cookie as the leading provider of fixed-line (or wireline) telecommunications services in more than a dozen provinces and autonomous regions of the country including the cities of Shanghai and Chongqing. The company's principal operations are in four of the most economically developed regions in China, including Shanghai and the provinces of Guangdong, Jiangsu, and Zhejiang. Its services, delivered through more than 210,000 access lines, include local access, domestic and international long-distance, managed data services, Internet access services, and leased lines.

Shares were up 5% after China's Ministry of Information Industry is expected to hand out licenses early next year.
