Vimpel-Communications (VimpelCom) is making a beeline to success as a leading mobile phone service provider in Russia. Under the Bee Line brand, the company has more than 45 million subscribers, including 8 million in the Moscow area. Most VimpelCom subscribers use the prepaid plan on VimpelCom's GSM (global system for mobile communications) network. The company owns wireless licenses that cover 94% of the Russian population, and it's growing by rolling out across the nation. VimpelCom, which in 1996 became the first Russian company to trade on the New York Stock Exchange, is partly owned by strategic partners Alfa Group (33% through Eco Telecom) of Russia, and a unit of Norway's Telenor (27%).

Shares were up 6% after VimpelCom announces is set to report third-quarter 2006 earnings results on Thursday morning.
