It's been almost two years since St. Francis lost a Suburban Catholic Conference match in girls volleyball.

The two-time defending Class A state champion Spartans lost only twice in the 2002 season and went the 2003 season without a conference loss.

St. Francis was going for consecutive conference win No. 24 at Rosary, but the Royals were just a touch too strong. The Spartans fell 25-23, 20-25, 16-25 on the opening night of the season Monday in Aurora.

"I was hoping we'd win in two (games), but (the Spartans) are not going to go down without a fight," Rosary coach Lisa Kasper said. "Even though they are young, they are going to put up a good fight."

Rosary led most of Game 1 before St. Francis came back. After four ties, the Spartans broke through and took a 21-20 lead on a Rosary error.
