In anthropomorphism, animals usually benefit from being given human characteristics. In NBC's new animated comedy "Father of the Pride," however, they fare much worse.

Like any sitcom father, the lion dad given voice by John Goodman thinks only of having sex with the mom. Like any sitcom mom, the lioness played by Cheryl Hines has to endure the loutish behavior of various males, not just the lion. Like any single sitcom woman, the panda played by Lisa Kudrow frets incessantly about finding a suitable mate.

The slick "Shrek"-style computer-generated animation, courtesy of DreamWorks studio head Jeffrey Katzenberg, can't mask the paint- by-numbers concept and flat dialogue. This is the same old dreary family sitcom, merely masquerading...
