Article Excerpt Well, if you ask me, Wal-Mart's getting impaled right here in the nation's finest city.
There's a stronger verb I'd like to use, but this being a business newspaper, social propriety compels me to restrain myself.
Last week, the San Diego City Council voted 5-3 to prohibit retail stores larger than 90,000 square feet selling at least 30,000 items and generating at least 10 percent of its revenue from nontaxable items, i.e. groceries.
The vote targets Wal-Mart, and only Wal-Mart, because only Wal-Mart is proposing to build new supercenters within the city that would cover 220,000 square feet of space and sell more than 30,000 items, including groceries.
Now why would our city elders order up such an ordinance, especially in view of the fact that the larger Wal-Mart stores would generate more sales, and hence, more retail...
