MISSISSIPPI GULF COAST -- Construction companies are thinking outside the box to solve manpower and housing shortages and other issues in the massive cleanup and rebuilding effort here. Large commercial construction companies are finding ways to help house employees, but small residential builders are scrambling for accommodations. And the real construction hasn't even begun yet.

Tun Belk, division president of F.L. Crane & Sons, says there's a little bit of a lull right now. "There's so much destruction that the design process is going on right now," he said. "We're waiting on design."

F.L. Crane & Sons is a commercial subcontractor that does metal studs, drywall and stucco for large contractors. They have 10 offices in Mississippi, Louisiana, Texas, Alabama and Florida with a labor pool of 800 to 900 people. Because of that pool and some hiring through out-of-state labor brokers, they haven't had too much trouble finding workers thus far.
