CHINA'S HUAWEI WINS US$44.9MLN INDIAN CONTRACT

NEW DELHI - Amid a debate over foreign firms taking part in sensitive sectors such as telecoms, Chinese company Huawei has won a Rs 2 billion (US$44.9 million) contract to add 500,000 broadband lines to state-owned MTNL (BSE:500108). Two Chinese firms - Huawei and ZTE - were shortlisted and Huawei emerged as the lowest bidder. The bids were opened last Tuesday and the total contract value is more than Rs 2 billion.

STANDARD CHARTERED SEEKS TO INVEST IN CHINESE BANKS

BEIJING - The UK-based, Hong Kong-listed Standard Chartered Group (SEHK:2888) plans to register on the Chinese mainland and will seek to become a strategic investor in selected mainland banks. Standard Chartered had gained US$500 million for its qualified domestic institutional investor (QDII) quota by the end of October this year and will set up a company and open Renminbi retail business in the Pearl River Delta soon.
