The nature and meaning of stone artefact variability in time and space has been problematic for Australian archaeologists for decades. But despite their archaeological prominence, there is no real consensus as to how Australian assemblages should be studied. Amorphous and undisciplined Australian assemblages contrast with the more ordered and tractable stone tool types of the European Palaeolithic. Ethnography has offered little comfort, with the widespread conclusion that form is unimportant, style non-existent, and form and function not closely related.
