For more than two decades, geographers have rallied around the assertion that 'geography matters!' (Massey and Allen 1984). With the arrival of Matthew Sparke's, In the Space of Theory, geographers will be compelled to consider the implications of another declaration: 'hyphens matter!'

Sparke's book is all about taking seriously the 'powerful world-making processes' (p. xii) that are marked by and reside in the hyphenations of the 'nation-state' and 'geo-graphy' (derived from the Greek words geo and graphien or 'earth-writing').
