It's a mixture that in the past has turned violent: close to 1,000 college students, a lot of alcohol, a party that's been shut down and teams of police officers telling people to disperse.

But instead of a riot, Friday's crowd outside a university-area fraternity house left peacefully, for the most part. Some words were exchanged, and a few people who refused to leave were arrested, but the situation ended without a pitched confrontation with police.

Officials with the Eugene Police Department and the University of Oregon said efforts by both organizations to head off problems before they start and also to spread the word about what can happen when things get out of control kept the lid on Friday night.
