The couch calls out, the TV beckons. That bottle of beer in the fridge is looking so much more inviting than a set of abdominal crunches or a jog in the rain.

As the days grow shorter and the skies grow cloudier, exercise can start to seem like an afterthought. But there are those among us who don't seem to mind the darkness or the dampness. Those who almost seem to thrive on the extra adversity presented by winter in the Northwest.

People such as Al Whalen, 44, a long-distance runner who belongs to a small training group that meets almost daily at around 5:30 a.m., rain or shine.

"The first time you're going to run in the rain always seems to be the hardest," says Whalen, a manager at Fiddler's Green Golf Course. "You don't remember how to dress, you don't remember how much colder 50 degrees feels when it's wet."

"But the rain never seems as bad when you're out in it as it seems when you're inside."
