A wild Halloween bash at a University of Oregon "dry" fraternity on Friday night brought at least 19 police officers out to control a crowd that had grown so threatening that entertainers at the party barricaded themselves in the basement, police said.

Scores of people were arrested or cited in the area of the party for alcohol-related offenses, and at least five partygoers ended up at the hospital.

The party at Delta Sigma Phi fraternity, 851 E. 15th Ave., had swelled to more than 1,000 people and had grown "beyond control of the residents" by the time officers arrived at a little past 10 p.m., police said.
